Jesus
spoke these immortal words in the Holy Writ when He said:
“Upon this rock I’ll build my church
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).
This
statement was taken literally in the Year of Our Lord, 1890 by a
 dedicated
minister of the Word in the person of Rev. H.E. Darrington. This congregation organized a church south of the present site
in a log cabi n, which at that time was the old Humdy Schoolhouse.
The church was organized on the letters of
Sis. Laura Johnson, (formerly of Calvary Baptist Church) and brother A.L. Davidson
(from Gainesville,
Texas. The first candidate for
baptism was Bro. Nick Antwine. Under
the leaderships of Rev. H.E. Darrington through Rev. J.W. Alexander
(1890-1946), two church buildings
had been constructed on this present site.
Through the divine working of the Holy Spirit and
effectual fervent prayers of righteous saints, God has sent 22 pastors to Mt. Pleasant
Church during the
time span of 1890-2007.
Rev. H.E. Darrington was the first
pastor and Rev. Kirk Rushing is the present pastor.
Mt. Pleasant has been under the leadership of
many great, zealous, and spirit-filled pastors. The
pastors who served this church from
1890-1946 were: Rev. H.E. Darrington, Rev. G.W. Hall, Rev. B.E. Givens, Rev. A.L. Davis, Rev. T.F.
Fisher, Rev. C.H. Wilson, Rev. T.C.
Collins, Rev. D.B. Hill, Rev. J.W. Ruff, Rev. H.D. Spears, and Rev.
J.H. Alexander. God
established these pastors at Mt. Pleasant for
1946-1963: Rev. J.J. Johnson, Rev. J.W. Fowler, Rev. E.C. Beatty,
Rev. O.C. Willis, and Rev. Tommy
Curry. During the years 1963-1984, God planted Rev. Paul
Henderson in His sacred pulpit.
Rev. Paul Henderson served and labored here for a span of twenty years. The church
was blessed from 1963-1996 with these faithful pastors: Rev. C.R. Cooper, Rev. Edell Heggins, Rev.
Tyrone Turner, and Rev. Carl Loftis. Each of these past overseers has
passed the baton of a spiritual
legacy to his successor, due to their high-spirited drive and a firm
belief in Jesus Christ. This
spiritual legacy of faith, trust, and obedience has blessed and impacted a multitude of
generations. This spiritual legacy is built on The Solid Rock, and that Solid Rock is
Jesus Christ. During this one hundred fifteen year time span, we have
been blessed with 22 deacons and 18
deaconesses. Our first deacons were Bro. Joe Patton, Bro.
H. D. Hood, Bro S.M. Forbes, Bro. J.B. Kirk, Bro.
J.H. Pyles, and Bro. W.M. Whitlow. We have been blessed with four
church clerks—Bro. J.W. Wirt, Sis.
Sallie Davidson, Sis. Mary Forbes, and Sis. Carolyn Pirtle.
The Washita and Caddo
Missionary Baptist District Association was organized the first
Sunday in March 1891, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Berwyn,
Oklahoma with two churches
participating. Mt. Pleasant was one of the
two churches. The name was
changed in 1905 to Chickasaw Nation thus eventually being called the Chickasaw Missionary Baptist
District Association. Rev. H.E. Darrington and Rev. T.F. Fisher made outstanding
contributions to the growth and
spiritual strength of the Chickasaw District Association with innovative and progressive ideas during
their tenures as moderator and
vice-moderator. Bro. J.W. Wirt (Mt.
Pleasant's first church
clerk) served as Chickasaw
District Treasurer. Rev. H.E. Darrington also served as treasurer of the Oklahoma State Baptist
Convention. Many of our current members are keeping
up this tradition by holding offices in the Chickasaw District. Mt. Pleasant is affiliated with
the Oklahoma State Baptist Convention and the National Baptist Convention
USA, Inc.
The ministries of our church include: Women Mission
Union, Young Adults,

Adult Day Services, Senior Citizens
Nutrition Center, Sunshine Industries, Children’s Shelter of Southern Oklahoma, Pregnancy Resource Clinic,
Langston Baptist Student Union, a community garden, and nursing home
visitations. We contribute regularly to the foreign mission, Camp Burge,
and Oklahoma
School of
Religion.
 Mt.
Pleasant takes seriously the edicts of the Church Vovenant.
This church
family believes in living in
covenant relationship with each other. There is a solemn agreement between members that we will
walk together according to the precepts of the Gospel in brotherly love. We
are religiously educating the church family through a very active Sunday School, Wednesday night Bible Study, Christian Education Classes, and
Chickasaw District Congress classes.
In the spirit of advancement, God sent Mt. Pleasant a
visionary on
March
9, 1997, in
the form of Rev. Kirk D. Rushing. God planted a vision at this
sacred place to build a new edifice
in the Precious Name of Our Heavenly Father. The seed for this vision was planted on June 4, 1999.
The visibility of this vision began with the groundbre aking ceremony on
Sunday, May 23, 2003. Let us
remember: A journey of one thousand miles begins with one
step. Proverbs 29:28
says: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The
vision turned into reality on Sunday, June 13, 2004 on
our 114th church
anniversary.
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church has come a mighty long way
from a log
cabin
(1890) to a brand new edifice
(2004)! AND THAT’S MIGHTY GOOD NEWS! Let us pay homage to the pioneers of this church, who
paved the way for us. Those who have stacked those old hymn books, closed their
Bibles, stuck their swords in the
golden sand of time—to study war no more, crossed that chilly
Jordan
River, and planted their feet firmly in Glory Land. We thank
and honor you for the spiritual
legacy we inherited from you.
  Mt.
Pleasant Baptist Church hears 1 Kings 9:3 ringing in her ears which
says, “And the Lord said unto him,
I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me. I have hallowed this
house, which thou has made before me. I have hallowed this house, which
thou has built, to put my name there forever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be
there always.”
Mt. Pleasant
Missionary Baptist Church has been on the battlefield for 117
years with Our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ as our Commander-in-Chief, forever looking unto Jesus who is the author and finisher
of our faith.
THE CHURCH WERE LOVE,
ACCEPTANCE, AND FORGIVENESS
EXIST!
Psalm 127:1—Except the Lord build the house they labor in
vain that build it except the Lord
keep the city, the watchmen waketh but in
vain. Psalm 15:1-2—Lord, who shall abide
in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2) He that walketh
uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his
heart.
